Day 5 - Burp Cloths

Welcome back, friends! This month we're working on 31 handmade gifts for everyone on your list. You can find links to the full series here.

This is our last gift idea for baby week, and it's super easy to make. It works up fast, too, so it's great for last minute gifts! We're going to be making some soft & squishy burp cloths.

Every mom needs burp cloths, and it certainly doesn't hurt to make them pretty. These guys aren't just pretty though. They're oh-so-soft and ready to tackle whatever baby throws (or spits) at you.

You can make them in mom's favorite colors or make a set to match her diaper bag.

You could even up-cycle a favorite t-shirt for an extra-special gift. As long as you don't mind it being spit up on, of course. ;)

Here's what you need to get started on your own:
  • 1/2 yard cotton fabric (pick something cute!)
  • 1/2 yard backing fabric (pick something cuddly soft like chenille)
  • thread

Start by pre-washing and drying all your fabrics. Then cut a 12 x 18" piece out of both the cotton fabric and backing fabric. (you'll want to press them if they are as wrinkly as mine) And I said this with the bibs too - my backing isn't actually chenille and I have no idea what it is. I was in a hurry and just grabbed something soft. :)

Lay the cotton on top of the backing with right sides together and pin them together.

Stitch all around the burp cloth with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving a 4" opening for turning on one side.

You can see I left an opening about halfway down the right side.

Clip the corners.

Turn the burp cloth right-side out through the opening. Push the corner out nice and square, then pin around the edges so the layers don't shift as you sew.

Stitch all around the burp cloth with a 1/8 - 1/4" seam allowance. Make sure you catch all the layers at the opening.

Draw lines dividing the burp cloth into thirds. I just measured in 5 1/2" from each end and called it good. Stitch along those lines.

And you're done!

Now go make a couple more to use a stocking stuffers, or to go together in a gift set.

Here's a breakdown of what I spent on supplies for this project:

$3.00 - cotton fabric
$4.00 - backing fabric with a 40% off coupon
$1.80 - thread, on sale

Total: $8.80

You can get three burp cloths out of this so it comes out to less than $3 each!

These also add a great handmade touch to any baby shower gift. Plus you can pair them with some bibs from earlier this week for a great mix & match set!

Hey guys, more B pics! And the grandparents rejoiced.

His "I'm a big brother" present was a new tent. It's love.

He circles through in an inifinte loop. And look, guys! Baby A made an appearance in the corner!

Remember we start kids week tomorrow! See you there!
