Standing Desk Series Intro

It's a kick-off within a kick-off! We're halfway through our DIY desk building series, but today we're starting the second phase in the series which is completely dedicated to standing desks! You may be familiar with standing desks (maybe there are already a few in your workplace!) and the benefits they can offer over a traditional desk. Adding movement to a big chunk of your day can have such a positive impact (if you want to get even more great movement into your workday, check out the book Don't Just Sit There). Here are a few tips for building and using your standing desk:
  •  Make it the right height. Standing desks are typically 40-44" high, but to get the best fit for you, measure from the ground to your elbow.
  • Anchor it. The taller something is, the easier it can tip over. A standing desk should be anchored to the wall (we like these), especially if you have kids in the house!
  • Ease into it. Not used to a standing work station? Don't ditch your standard desk just yet. You might need to go back and forth for a while while you adjust.
  • Don't just stand there. Standing still all day isn't a whole lot better than sitting still all day. Use this chance to move your legs, stretch your calves, and move around.
Here are the quick links to all the standing desks we'll be building, followed by tips for modifying a few other plans in the series to standing-height (don't forget to check out the rest of the desk building series):
