A great piece of art can really make a room. It can set the stage for the colors, theme, and overall feel of the space. So today we're going to look at how we can get great, unique art for next to nothing and, more importantly, get art that represents ourselves and the things we love!
A great way to get unique, personal art is to reuse and recycle things that are already around you! A good place to start is to think of what you are passionate about. I
studied interior design in college and it's definitely one of my passions, so I want to incorporate it into the art in our office. I still have a lot of my floor
plans from projects stashed in the closet, so I'm going to pick out three favorites and pop them into matching frames to display in a group. Just like that I'll have art that represents me without spending a penny!
What inspiration can you pull from your passion to use in your decor? Here are a few examples of places to look for art in your home:
Photography - If you like photography, print some of your favorite picture to frame around the house. Or take pictures of what you are passionate about - your kids, nature, food - to frame. I printed TONS of pictures of Baby B for the gallery wall. And I love them all.
Wrappers - Do you love to cook? Or drink coffee? Or chew gum? Save some of the wrappers or labels from your favorite things to pop into a frame.
Pages - Pull a beautiful picture from a magazine, a page from your favorite book, or a picture from an old calendar. If you see a page that represents you, find a way to give it center stage in your home.
Post Cards - Pop a favorite post card into a frame or use several to make a larger installation. It's a great way to remember places you've been, or show off a special card someone sent to you. In my gallery wall I have a postcard my sister brought back from Paris!
Fabric - If you like to sew, like me, you probably have a pile of fabric scraps laying around. Find a favorite and frame it or wrap it around a canvas for a nice abstract-style piece of art. It's a great way to use up some of the beautiful prints you can't bring yourself to throw away!
Free Printables - Having trouble finding something on hand to artify? (yeah, I just made up a new word. you're welcome to use it) There are TONS of free printables available online! Just find one you like, print it out, and pop it in a frame. To get started, check out this 31 Day series by Creative Kristi dedicated to free printables. And this post by The Frugal Homemaker has several great free printables.
What are you passionate about? How can you turn that passion into art?
I think this is my favorite blog about home decor I've ever read. Period. Hillary.
