Day 21 - Build a Simple Frame (three ways!)

http://www.morelikehome.net/2x4s

Three weeks down already! You can see links to the complete series here, and get details about my Lowe's gift card giveaway here. In this series, we're seeing what we can make out of 2x4s. I want to keep it cheap, keep it easy, and keep it totally doable for anyone. Today we'll be doing a really easy project that is also very versatile - we're building a Simple Frame.

This big, chunky frame can make a statement all on its own. Pair it with a canvas painting, chalk board, or even a pretty map to create a fun focal point. We'll be looking at 3 different design options that require just a simple change to the plans. Ready to get started?

Shopping List:
2  -  2x4s @ 10' long
Frame Mounting Hardware

Tools:
Saw
Drill
2 1/2” screws (or Kreg Jig & 2 1/2" self tapping screws)
4" screws (or Kreg Jig & 2 1/2" self tapping screws)
Wood glue
Wood filler

2x4 Cut List:
(A) - 2  @  31" (top/bottom)
(B) - 2  @  18"  (sides)
(C) - 2  @  31"  (top/bottom trim)
(D) - 2  @  28"  (side trim)

Dimensions: 34" wide x 28" tall x 3 1/2" deep

Please read all the directions before beginning, and cut your pieces as you go, measuring before each cut. Use 2 1/2” screws or pocket holes with 2 1/2" screws unless otherwise indicated. Always use glue. Pre-drill and countersink your screws. I have not built from these exact plans, so measure lots to make sure things work out!

These plans are designed to house a 18x24 canvas, but can be easily altered to fit whatever you need. :)

Step 1: Frame it
Start by using the side pieces to connect the top and bottom pieces of the frame. Use a Kreg Jig to join the boards from behind with 2 1/2" pocket screws, or drill through the top of the top board (and bottom of the bottom board) into the sides with 4"screws and glue. And that's option one! If you want a simple frame like this, you're done! Skip ahead to step 3. :)

Step 2: The Trim
Start by attaching the top and bottom trim. Use a Kreg Jig, or drill through the trim and into the frame with 2 1/2" screws and glue. You want the trim to be flush with the right & left sides of the frame, and flush across the back. And here is option #2: skip the top trim and just attach the bottom trim piece. This will create a little ledge or shelf below the frame. It's super cute... there is an example of this under Step 3.

Now attach the side trim. This should be flush with the edges of the top & bottom trim. Attach in the same way as the top & bottom trim. That's option #3!

Step 3: Finishing!
Start by filling any holes and sanding everything down. Now you can finish however you like! Try a rustic stain or a crisp white coat of paint. Now fill it up with your favorite art! This isn't designed to be used with glass, but would be perfect with a canvas painting nestled inside. Maybe a fun geometric painting like this:

Or find a chalkboard and build your frame to fit. Both these options would sit inside the frame and could be attached with finishing nails or glue. Another option would be to use a favorite map or poster - stretch it across the back of the frame and staple it on. So many possibilities!
