Is it a 2x4?

2x4s are wonderful. They're both versatile and inexpensive, making them ideal for many projects. Unfortunately, for first-time builders, they can be difficult to spot in the wild. 1. I found a board in my wall. It seems to be attached to both the floor and the ceiling. Is it a 2x4?

PROBABLY. But leave it there, it's already doing something important.

2. I measured my board and it's 2" by 4". Is it a 2x4?

NO. The actual dimensions of a 2x4 are 1.5" by 3.5".

3. I can't find my glasses, but this board feels fuzzy. Is it a 2x4?

NO. That's your cat, keep it away from the saw.

4. This board is 1.5" by 3.5", but it's shaped like the letter "U". Is it a 2x4?

YES. But you're going to want straight ones for pretty much any building project.

5. I can see lots of layers in my board. Is it a 2x4?

You're looking at plywood, but I suppose if it's 1.5" x 3.5" you could use it as a 2x4. Plywood will be more expensive than pre-cut boards.

6. The board seems to be the right size, but it crumbles in my hand. Is it a 2x4?

YES. But you have termites, call an exterminator immediately.

7. This board tastes delicious! Is it a 2x4?

NO. Wood tastes awful. You're probably eating a cake.

YES. But it's a steel 2x4. They're expensive and not as easy to work with, so just go with wood.

9. I gathered up all my extra sawdust, added glue, and put it in a 2x4-sized mold. Is it a 2x4?

NO. That's the worst idea I've ever heard.
