Aaaaand I'm late. Sorry guys! I actually tried two different projects yesterday and they both failed miserably. So I went back to the drawing board and came up with a new plan to finish guys' week... and started from scratch this morning (hopefully I'll catch up tomorrow!). And Husband actually hopped in a whipped up today's Dr. Who inspired project! It's a Moleskine Journal with a Tardis twist, inspired by River Song's own journal.
It's more of a subtle modern twist on the actual notebook, but I think it's something the Whovians out there will enjoy and it's really easy to DIY.
Husband came up with this one all on his own. We're definitely Dr. Who fans and River Song is my favorite (I put in on our list of baby names in case Baby A turned out to be a girl. Husband vetoed it. Boo.). But he knows I love a good Moleskine so when he came across these pretty blue ones he hatched a plan!
I'm sure they are great as journals, but they're also great for general note-taking and such. I have one that I use just for writing down all the funny things B says and does. Read it and you will laugh until you cry. Seriously. But I also like them for writing down anything I want to remember later. Favorite verses, new recipes, good advice, Christmas lists.... you name it!
Here's all you need to make one:
- a tardis blue Moleskine (we used these ones)
- sliver spray paint
- contact paper & an exacto knife
- template (download it here)
Start by printing out the journal template.
Apply a sheet of contact paper across the front of the journal (you may want to try getting it a little smoother than this... oops.).
Then trim the template down to fit on the journal. It should be on top of the contact paper, we forgot to take a pic before we cut it up so this is a do-over picture. ;) Use an exacto knife to cut out the black shapes.
Remove the template and peel off the black shapes (we cut ours thinner than the template shows, just kind of eyeballed it. If you cut right a long the lines you'll end up with a beefier stencil, and probably a straighter Tardis!).
It should look something like this when you're done:
Now you can spray paint that puppy. We bought a tiny can of silver at Michaels.
Give it a quick coat of spray paint. Once it's dry (ours needed 30 minutes to dry) peel off the contact paper.
And you're done! You can see where the bubbles in the contact paper were, so if you make sure you get it flat you shouldn't have that problem. Did I mention we were in a hurry after two failed projects? :)
Wrap it up and put it under the tree for your favorite Whovian.
Here's what it cost to make:
$11.00 - Moleskine (pack of two)
$2.00 - spray paint with 40% off coupon
$0.00 - contact paper (already had it, but you can get it at Dollar Tree)
$0.00 - Exacto knife, already had it
Total: $13.00
But you get two notebooks out of it so it's really only $7.00 per notebook!
Any other Dr. Who fans? What would be your dream Dr. Who inspired gift?
