Magnetic Fishing Game Busy Bag

In the lasts couple weeks before Baby A made his appearance I was frantically putting together some fun things for B to do while we would be stuck at home recovering. One thing I did was make up several busy bags. Just some quiet activities we could do sitting around the living room. Well, as quiet as you can get with a little ball of energy.  The first one I made was a magnetic fishing game.

It's actually really easy... and no sewing required! For each fish I started by cutting out two fish shapes from a piece of felt (I just made up the shape and traced it so my fishies would match... but different sizes & shapes would be fun too!)

I hot glued a metal washer to one side.

Then put a line of hot glue all around the edge of the felt.

And put the other piece of felt on top.

If you want a really simple fishy you could stop there (or maybe add some googly eyes? I think I'm going to go back and add some.) But I wanted a game that could kind of grow with B so I cut some numbers out of contrasting felt and hot glued them on the front of each fishy. For now we just have fun catching fishies but when he's a bit older he can catch them in order, try to catch certain numbers, or catch the answers to math problems.

To make the fishing pole I just glued a magnet to a piece of yarn and tied it to a pencil. All done!

Then I just tucked all the pieces into a ziploc bag until we're ready to pull it out and play. This was a really cheap bag to make. I used four sheets of felt that were $0.25 each, a $1 pack of washers, and the pencil, yarn, and magnet were already around the house. So my total cost for this bag was just $2.00!

You could make so many fun variations with this game. Try making other sea creatures or use lots of different felts to help teach colors. We're always looking for new ways to play - how would you use a game like this?

  1. I am a preschool teacher and I think I will make this for my Math center. I think it would also work with matching upper case letters to lower case.

  2. I just wanted to say that this is a great idea - and when you said it is simple, it really seems to be simple!! You got me at no sewing required. I think I will try it for my son's fishing theme birthday that is coming up. Thanks!
