We Painted the Cabinets!

I just realized today it's been almost 2 1/2 years since we moved in. Which means we've been "remodeling our kitchen" for over 2 years. Ugh. Of course most of that time has been us not touching the kitchen just hoping it would finish itself. But every now and then we get a burst of energy and tackle the next step. A little while ago we had such a burst and finally... painted the cabinets! Woot!

I'll fill you in on the details later this week, but first I wanted to take a look at where we started, and the real life timeline of our kitchen makeover....
The day we closed on the house, our kitchen looked like this. Not all bad, but kind of outdated and seriously lacking storage space. Our remodel actually started that day very day when we took out the wall between the kitchen and living room! (you can see the wall on the right in the pic below)

Over a year later (February 2011, we were still in the baby stage, just collecting cabinets & supplies, working on a layout, and tackling more pressing issues like a working stove, microwave, and light above the sink. You can tell how long it really was because we went from babyless (above) to a sitting baby B (below).

10 months after that we finally got shelves from Ikea but were still rocking the plywood countertop/no storage look.

Enter 2012. In April we installed our new sink & dishwasher! Which meant ripping out all of the base cabinets and leaving us temporarily storing EVERYTHING in the office and basement. Fun.

Another 4 months pass, and we are finally ready (and able $$) to start tackling our new cabinetry. In one crazy week (with lots of help from family) we built-in all of the new base cabinetry.

For once we kept things moving and poured our concrete countertops just a month later.

And a couple months after that we tackled the painting. Which was actually a couple months ago, so we're about due for some more progress. ;) Like I said, I'll have all the painting details later this week!

That brings us up to today. I'm glad we knocked out the painting, but we still have quite a bit to do before this baby is done. Like buying hinges, installing the rest of the doors, adding shelves to the base cabinets, and finding/building bar stools...

...filling some holes from updating the wiring & adding a backsplash...

...adding toe kick to the cabinets (and painting it!), replacing baseboards, and adding trim. (10 points to gryffindor if you find the rouge noodle)....

...filling in gaps in the flooring, replacing the ceiling fan, and possibly even repainting the walls (I'm still not sold on the yellow).

So there you have it. 2 1/2 years in with a long way to go. I feel like sometimes it's easy to get discouraged when you're looking at makeovers online and can hop from the before pics to the beautiful after in a matter of seconds. It's easy to forget that things actually take time (and money, and saving up money) and I can get super frustrated with the amount of time it's taking us to get to the end. So hopefully this offers a little encouragement to anyone else wading through the middle of a big project. I know we will get it done someday. We are making (slow. so slow.) progress. And I'm just trying to be happy with where we are compared to where we started - um, hello tons of storage space and spiffy countertop. We'll get there. :)
