Crayon Roll Stocking Stuffers - Tutorial

In my pay it forward post, I mentioned making crayon rolls!

They are great for traveling with kids, and make perfect stocking stuffers! And they are super easy to make, so you have plenty of time to pull them off before Christmas. The finished size is about 5 1/2" tall by 12" wide, and it holds 12 crayons (but you can easily make it hold more!). Ready to stuff your stockings?

Fabric (three 6"x13" pieces)
Ribbon (about 18")

Start by cutting out three pieces of fabric 6 x 13" - one for the outside, one for the lining, and one for the pocket. (if you want to do more crayons, just add 1" for each crayon to the 13" measurements)

Fold the pocket piece in half length ways with wrong sides together and press. Lay the folded piece on the lining fabric, lining up the bottom raw edges with the bottom of the lining fabric. Pin it in place.

Measure in 1 1/2" from the left side of the pocket and mark a line. Then mark a parallel lines 1" apart all across the pocket, leaving 1 1/2" at right side too. Sew along the lines.

Lay the outside fabric face down on top of the lining and pocket, lining up the outside edges. Sew around the edge with a 1/2" seam allowance, but be sure to leave a 3" opening at one end for turning. Or, forget like I do and make an opening with the seam ripper later. :)

Clip the corners and turn the roll right-side out. Top stitch all around the edges, close to the edge (think 1/8" or less).

Cut a piece of ribbon about 18" long (longer if you made a bigger roll for more crayons). Fold it in half and put the fold on one end of the roll like shown below. Sew it in place.

Now fill it up with crayons!

Then roll it up and tie the ribbon in a nice little bow.

Wasn't that easy? And such a fun gift! Put it in a stocking with a coloring book and stickers.

Or make a bunch for friends & classmates!

They would also be great additions to shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child (next year. they've already done pick-up for this year).

If you like to crochet, pair a crayon roll with a couple friendly monsters and you can fill a stocking for super cheap!

What is your favorite way to fill stockings?
